All You Need To Know About Flush And Non-Flush Casement Windows

Our window range is as extensive as you will get anywhere and within Visual’s collections are flush casement windows and casement windows.

It may have you scratching your head wondering what the difference is between the two products.

The ‘flush’ casement gets its name because it has a perfectly flat look on the outside due to the window sashes sitting flush against the window frame.

A standard casement window has window sashes that don’t create a flat surface and slightly overlap the window frame.

An in-person inspection of both solutions at our Mirfield showroom will show you what we mean.

What is the history of flush and non-flush casements?

Well, the first flush casement window was made in the 19th century and produced using timber as wood was the go-to material for window building in those days.

Now you know why so many properties of the Edwardian, Victorian and late Georgian eras have timber flush casement windows.

Non-flush casements date back earlier, to the 18th century (300 years on and they remain as popular as they’ve ever been). It was blacksmiths that would build them and do so with iron, not timber.

Why are flush windows so fashionable at present?

Visual is one of a few window suppliers that recognised a rise in demand for windows with an alternative look and responded with the rollout of modern flush windows, or as we like to call the collection, Envisage.

Envisage has a design that replicates the lines and proportions of a traditional timber flush casement window for authenticity purposes, but instead of timber, its profile is made from UPVC so that it commands minimal maintenance and offers the best in energy efficiency.

Which do I buy for my home?

Historic homes and those within conservation areas need an exact match for their original windows and flush UPVC windows are regarded as such by most planners because of their faithful design.

Flush sash windows also have the faultless symmetry that modern buildings suit so much, especially when they’re finished in either Black or Anthracite Grey.

Casement windows are an incredibly versatile style and for that reason, quite easily work with just about any property type.
