Get Your Ears Around These Albums This Winter

It’s been a fantastic year for music. The biggest surprise so far has undoubtedly been the return of David Bowie to the music scene who released his first studio album ‘The Next Day’ for a decade, a return that no-one saw coming. It proved a triumph for the ‘Starman’, receiving critical acclaim and a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize.

Then it was the turn of the robots. Comprised of French-duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Daft Punk’s release of the undeniably catchy disco-inspired single ‘Get Lucky’ in April hugely whetted the appetite for ‘Random Access Memories’ their first proper album in eight years which went on to reach number one across the globe.

2013 has also seen the rise of a host of British artists including Disclosure, Rudimental, London Grammar, amongst many others. But there’s still plenty to look forward to in the last few months and where better to listen to them than in your conservatory or orangery with the speakers turned up loud.

Kings of Leon – Mechanical Bull

We’ve already heard two tasters from the album in the form of ‘Supersoaker’ and ‘Wait for Me’ and have been promised a long player bearing a similar sound to that of their earlier work. After the release of their previous album ‘Come Around Sundown’ and reported infighting between band members it was touch and go whether we would ever see another KOL record but thankfully harmony was restored and ‘Mechanical Bull’ is the result.

Arcade Fire – Reflektor

Last week saw the release of the single of same name on 9/9, 9pm on 9th September featuring David Bowie on backing vocals. The single and double album have both been produced by former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy so expect to hear tracks filled with a more dance-influenced sound. If it’s anywhere near as good as the previous three albums ‘Funeral’, Neon Bible’ and ‘The Suburbs’ then it’s guaranteed to be a hit.

Justin Timberlake – The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2

The ex N-Sync member promised his fans that they would get two helpings of his music this year and he hasn’t let them down. The second part of the 20/20 experience comes ahead of Timberlake’s forthcoming world tour starting in October in Montreal and has already spawned the single ‘Take Back the Night’, a single with a sound that owes a tremendous debt to one of Justin’s musical heroes; Michael Jackson.
