Guiding You Through UK Energy Efficient Windows

Lowering outdoor temperatures often herald colder homes, which can be a sign that their windows are allowing heat to escape.

How much will I save on heating if I get energy efficient windows fitted?

A move away from basic single glazing or inadequate double glazing to have contemporary A-rated energy efficient windows occupy your home’s openings can result in a reduction of heat loss by as much as 70%.

Owners of a typical semi-detached property could make an annual saving of £100-£300 on heating costs. Larger savings are achievable if you live in a detached or large dwelling as they have extra window area and demand more energy.

Results will be dependent on things like U-values, airtightness, total window area, house style and present insulation.

How do casements, sash and tilt & turn windows fare for efficiency?

Seals have a major hand in how much energy efficiency the various window styles offer. Get the full lowdown on draught proofing windows and the best energy efficient windows from our welcoming team of window advisors.

Air leaks are quite common in traditional sash windows, but casement windows and tilt & turn windows are more tightly sealed and therefore don’t incur as much heat loss.

Heating costs will stay low and comfort remain high when you prioritise the buying of well-sealed, high-performance windows.

Understanding A, B and C-rated windows

The Window Energy Rating (WER) system helps window buyers to identify the energy efficiency provided by replacement windows.

A-rated windows offer the highest standard of thermal efficiency, doing so by preserving heat and reducing dependency on heating. Building regulations stipulate C-rated windows as a minimum requirement, which cost less, but don’t come close to matching the insulation you get with A and B-rated windows.

There’s a stark difference between the amount of comfort you get from C and A-rated windows, with the latter decreasing draughts and bill charges.

Highlighting the importance of U-values

Aside from WERs, it’s also worth noting U-values when looking at windows. A window’s U-value represents how much heat escapes from it (aim for the lowest possible U-value you can afford). Typical ranges are:

  • Single glazing: 5.0–6.0 W/m²K
  • Old double glazing: 2.8–3.0 W/m²K
  • Modern A-rated windows: 1.2–1.6 W/m²K

Follow our advice on WER ratings and U-values and it will make it easy to recognise solutions that make heating costs more affordable and uplift comfort levels. Our window brochure is worth a flick through as a starting point.
