What counts as a standard door size?
Strictly speaking, the UK doesn’t run on one universal door size; instead, manufacturers and homeowners rely on several well‑established options.
In England and Wales, 2’6” (30 inches / 762 mm) is the crowd favourite, while many Scottish properties feature a slightly slimmer 28.5 inch (726 mm) width.
“Standard” also depends on who’s fitting it.

Standard Internal Door Sizes
Internal doors are still talked about in both imperial and metric terms. That “2 ft 6” door you spot in older properties (or in spec sheets) is exactly 762 mm.
England and Wales often use 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9”; Scotland tends to favour metric sizing, particularly in newer developments, where 2040 mm‑tall doors are a common pick.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
Replacing a front or back door? You’ll find a familiar run of external sizes across the UK. Many doors start at 1981 mm in height and fall between 610 mm and 926 mm in width, which is handy for traditional openings and straightforward like‑for‑like swaps.
Looking for extra height? The 2040 mm series, long established in modern Scottish builds, is catching on elsewhere for a more open, contemporary feel.

Standard Door Sizes by Material
Different materials come with different slab profiles. Timber doors generally land between 44 and 56 mm thick; composite slabs can run from about 44 up to 70 mm; UPVC versions are commonly slimmer.
Thickness has knock‑on effects for energy performance, security hardware and fitting clearances.
